NAVICURE SUPPORTS PRACTICES PREPARING FOR THE MAY 2007 NPI DEADLINE

Most healthcare organizations across the country have May 23, 2007 circled on their calendars.

That’s the deadline for physician practices and payers to adopt standard unique identifiers – as required by the Administrative Simplification provisions of the 1996 HIPAA legislation. The implementation of National Provider Identifiers (NPI) is intended to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of electronic transmission of health information.

Navicure recognizes that meeting this deadline poses a challenge for many practices – and has implemented a multifaceted plan to help ensure that our clients are in compliance by that date and experience no disruption in service during the transition.

We recommend that you begin the process of applying for your NPI number as soon as possible – if you haven’t done so already. You can get detailed information about the NPI program at NPI Dear Provider and can complete the application online at The National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES).

Once you have received your NPI, you can forward it to Navicure, which began accepting NPI numbers submitted with claims earlier this summer. We’ll automatically add the NPI to your Provider Profile. Contact Navicure at enrollment@navicure.com to get the documentation to submit your NPI numbers.

If you are transmitting claims to Navicure using the ANSI 837 file format, you will be able to send the new NPI number with your claims file. Plus, Navicure can assist you if you are using an older file format and not able to include the NPI number in your claims file. We will simply extract the necessary information from your Provider Profile and forward it on your behalf as the payer requires it. Remember, however, that you must continue to send your existing legacy provider numbers in order to receive reimbursement. Do not replace those numbers with your NPI numbers.

In addition, check with your practice management system vendor to see if the application you are using includes fields to accommodate your NPI. Even if the system doesn’t provide this functionality, Navicure has the capacity to incorporate your NPI during claims processing.

Between Fall 2006 and the May 2007 deadline, Navicure will also monitor NPI requirements on a payer-by-payer basis to insure that the proper number (NPI, legacy or both) is submitted. During this transition period, we ask that you contact Navicure before making changes to the way you send either legacy provider numbers or your new NPI number. After May 23, 2007, Navicure will continue to work with payers and support whichever number format they require.

“We recognize that this is a period of transition, and we are committed to providing a solution that enables a physician practice to meet these requirements – even if its existing PMS does not allow NPIs to be sent with claims,” explains Laura Bridge, Director of Client Services. “We feel that our NPI plan offers physician practices of all sizes a quick and easy solution so they can be prepared to meet NPI requirements well before the deadline.”
