When practices invest in new technology, such as a practice management system (PMS) or an electronic medical record (EMR), they must be assured that these solutions provide optimal operability. That’s why it is imperative that you choose open systems, which are designed to promote connectivity among a wide range of applications and services. Open systems provide maximum flexibility and efficiency, and also advance the true intent of the HIPAA legislation: to facilitate effective communications between provider and payer. Some vendors, however, impose limits on the products and services that a practice can pair with their PMS or EMR. Instead of providing access to a full range of claims processing, revenue cycle management and other related systems, vendors may limit your choices and force you to settle for applications that may not adequately support your operational goals. To avoid these restrictions, be attentive to efforts that might limit your access to these options. Challenge vendors that restrict choices and seek open systems that will allow you to adopt applications that best meet your needs. After all, the customer is always right. Sincerely,
Jim Denny
